Thanks to all wonderful people who came over! With a little 5 minute delay we managed to start the slide presentation and the lecture on Abstract Expressionism, swiftly moving over the European Informel. We mainly talked about Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning and their contribution to the arts of that era. For those of you who have missed the first gathering you can pick up the transcripts of the discussion IN-world @ the Open Art Critique Location, OR view it here: OAC III transcript I.

The theme for next week Open Art Critique is: Express your reaction to something you saw, heard, or encountered over the week. Whether you create a cartoon, painting, sketch, sculpture, drawing, whatever it is- it doesn’t have to be a complete ellaborate art-piece- just an expression of something that had impact on you. Import it to Second Life, bring it over to the Open Art Critique site and it will be critiqued by the following model:
Questions In Art Criticism
- Description: What do I see? ( feel, hear, smell, taste)?
- Subject Matter: Does the artwork depict anything? If so, what?
- Medium: What tools, materials, or processes did the art maker use?
- Form: What elements did the maker choose and how did the maker organize the elements?
- Interpretation: What is the artwork about?
- Interpretive Statement: Can I express what I think the artwork is about in one sentence?
- Evidence: What evidence inside or outside the artwork supports my interpretation?
- Judgment: Is it a good artwork?
- Criteria: What criteria do I think are most appropriate for judging the artwork?
- Evidence: What evidence inside or outside the artwork relates to each criterion?
- Judgment: Based on the criteria and evidence, what is my judgment about the quality of the artwork?
It would be ideal if everyone is capable of answering those questions objectively about their own work. The way we will conduct the next Open Art Critique meeting is as follows:
Artists bring one piece to the above assigned theme, and have prepared/thought about how to best critique their own work to the above questions. Each artist will introduce their piece to the group by the name of the piece, and by answering given questions to the best of their verbal ability. After all the pieces are introduced (we will not spend more time then 10 minutes per each piece) volunteers within the group will choose to critique a piece that strikes them as their most or least favorite from presented works.
NOTE! - word ‘criticism’ often has a negative connotation. We are trying to change that. The aim of the group is to create a community of contemporaries within Second Life for the purpose of cross-influence, education and potential collaboration. Best way to do that is to follow each others progress, constructively critique it and give each other suggestions to how best render pieces of art to make them understandable to others.
